Wisdom Teeth

I just got my wisdom teeth pulled out. Before I did, though, I told all my friends to save their horror stories until afterwards. Now, I'm ready to hear everyone's- just for the heck of it.

Mine actually went pretty well, my dentist didn't even want to sedate me- and I understand why. Just some anesthetic, some pliers, a drill, and ploop, they were out! Bleeding stopped after about 7 hours, and I could speak pretty normally(but with a lisp) the next day...

I'm still a little uncomfortable, and as it turns out, Vicodin doesn't do much, but I'm a trooper.

Your turn!!!

I'm glad your experience went so well. I've heard some really bad horror stories from friends. I still have all my wisdom teeth. They popped in without any problem. My dentist occasionally suggests that I should have them removed, but they don't cause me any problems and it's just not something I really want to go through. I do have to work harder at keeping them clean and flossed as they're more prone to getting cavities.

Like yours, my experience was pretty in and out. I just needed a local anestetic. I was a little soar afterwards, but I was able to talk and eat just fine. However, my sister was a different story, she needed her teeth to be drilled out of her jaw. Man, she was in a lot of pain, and her poor face was swollen for a number of days.

I'm glad your experience wasn't so bad.

I'm glad yours went well. I was in the wost pain of my life. heh. They didn't give me a syringe to wash it out with, and food got stuck, so it really really hurt. Plus, I can only take 1/2 a hydrocodone because I am such a tiny person that a full one makes me sick. heh. KEEP FEELING GOOD! :)

I had mine out when I was in my teens. They put me under; the last thing I remember is counting back from 99. I then woke up in a cot in another room. I think I had it done on a Friday so I was able to lay around for the weekend. I think I may have had some pain but not alot. I ate alot of eggs LOL.

Same here i know when I got out and my mouth was numb I went to take a drink and the water just came out all over me. the pain was not so bad but I looked like a little chipmonk with the cheeks all full due to the swelling but after about 3 days I was back to my self

I got totally knocked out for mine, since my teeth were impacted and had to be broken to be taken out. I don't remember most of that day following the procedure. My mom told me that when she came in the room as I was waking up I did three things: 1, told her I loved her, 2, asked if I looked fat (subconsious worries of my cheeks puffing out.... I was 18 at the time, it was a major concern lol) and 3, apparently went on a rant about an ex-boyfriend from over a year beforehand who apparently I still cared about! I told my mom I made a mistake by moving to Nebraska and should have stayed with him and married him.... yuck! lol!

What's funny is Mom waited four years to tell me that third part of the story! It's pretty hilarious now!

I had one of mine taken out the day before my 25th birthday. I was only born with 3 and the 1 bottom one decided to poke through. Unfortunately it was impacted so I had to be knocked out. They ended up shaving off part of my jaw to get it out too.

I remember everything after them waking me up, especially the nurse being rude and then telling me I wouldn't remember anything anyway. I always remember everything after anesthesia though. Something about the way my body processes things. The dentist gave me percocet which made me hyper. It took away the pain but instead of sleeping I was jumping off the walls. I nearly went back to work that day because I was feeling so good. I'm really glad I didn't though. My face got really bruised but it was gone within a week.

The worst part was that the antibiotic caused me to get gastritis. My stomach starting hurting about 5 days after the surgery, then I went back to work on the 6th day. My stomach hurt so badly and I felt so nauseous that I couldn't walk around. I ended up leaving about an hour and a half after I got there and missing 3 more days.

I got 3 and all of them are impacted. When I went to the oral surgeon to see about getting my eyeteeth (canine teeth, whatever) exposed and pulled down, I also checked on my wisdom teeth. One of the ones on my bottom (might be the only one on the bottom) is so close to a nerve that if they remove it, I might have permanent nerve damage. So I'm not getting them removed unless I absolutely have to. As for the eyeteeth surgery, I'm getting that done on New Year's Eve, unless my grandma FORCES me to get it done before Christmas. I just don't want to be in pain and completely loppy during the holidays.

I don't blame you Val.

My two top ones are impacted too, but since they're not causing any problems I left them there.

The one I had out had a nerve running across the bottom, so I was freaked out about nerve damage. But since it had popped out a little I had no choice to get it out. It wouldn't come out all the way and with the little bit exposed it made it a huge risk for infection.

I had to have something similar done with my canines val. The baby ones wouldn't come out so the top ones starting growing in above them. The dentist had to go in and remove the baby ones, then they did some scary stuff to my gums to make the adults look natural. I still have lumps on my gums near the top of my gums.

Maybe you are the next step in human evolution that will finally rid us these bothersome and unnecessary teeth! Nature somehow went awry and gave us too many of them for such small jaws. And they certainly don't make us any "wiser."

I might add that I had four other teeth extracted for braces, and while it wasn't agony, it's not something I want to go through again, and removing wisdom teeth is much more complicated.

I had to have 4 permanent teeth (not baby teeth) pulled before I got braces too. I had teeth growing above them so they had to pull them so the others could grow down. For a week after that all I could eat was milk shakes and fries LOL.

I had my wisdom teeth out around 20 years ago. My dentist did the first one, but didn't give me enough novacaine, so when he started, it was painful. He gave me more after he realized I hadn't had enough.

He recommended I go to an oral surgeon for the others whenever they came in and I did. I was completely under for those.

Glad you wisdom teeth went out without too much of a fuss!

I chose to be unconscious during my wisdom teeth removal, mainly since my two bottom wisdom teeth were coming in horizontally and would remain under my gums.

Luckily, nothing too crazy happened, though the oral surgeon had a very difficult time finding a vein in my arm to inject the knock out medication. I heard him say, "I can't find a good vein, missy," and, apparently, after the operation, I kept repeating that phrase over and over again until I regained full consciousness.

Awkward.

Keepin' the safe place!

My wisdom teeth grew in when I was 16, and since I had braces before then it made room for them. So I never had to have them taken out. My dentist told me as long as I kept them clean and flossed I wouldn't have any trouble with them.

I love my dentist! :D

I might add that I'm having another four teeth taken out this friday for the same reason- Go adult braces!
...and I still haven't healed yet. There are these big gaping holes in the back of my mouth- it's so alien. I've been doing everything to keep it clean but paranoia still sets in. Now I'm really not gonna be able to eat.
Go liquid diets!

by the way, "Ensure" is nasty- tastes like cold hot chocolate with a multivitamin like centrum blended in.

Oh man, four more out? I feel for ya. Well, mashed potatoes and gravy will become your most frequent meal. And squash, pea soup, ice cream . . . LOL The extractions heal pretty quickly, but the braces, when they tighten the wires, are what hurt, but you'll get used to that.

I'm glad your teeth came out without a lot of problems, Shankins.

I had three removed in total, two at the same time in Mexico about 25 years ago. The dentist took a chisel and hammer (small one), and knocked em straight enough to pull out,,no infection, just sore for a couple of days. The third was done here in the states, not a lot of digging but I developed a nasty infection that required a 10 days of antibiotics and the dentist didn't use enough local to numb me well enough to boot.

I'm only fifteen so I haven't had any taken out yet, but like-- all four of mine are already half way grown in. (I'm a freak!!) It pretty much sucks. I hate em.

I don't know much about wisdom teeth, but mine are so awkward and hurt sometimes so I'm guessing I will probably have them removed at some point.

I have a couple of senior friends who recently got theirs removed and apparently the afterwards was pretty okay for them-- you know, what with all the drugs and all =] So maybe it won't be too terrible for me, lol! xD

I'm glad you went through with no problems, Shankins!

I had braces for 2 1/2 years. After they would tighten the wires, I would chew gum to loosen them up. LOL. The worst was the headgear; the contraption I had to wear at nite to push my upper teeth back cuz I had a slight overbite. I hardly wore it though, thats why I had the extra 1/2 year of braces LOL.
